Trich is caused by a parasite. Symptoms can be different for guys and girls and most don’t even know they’re infected.
Trich is most commonly passed from one person to another during vaginal sex. It can also be passed from a vagina to another vagina.
Most people who have trich will not feel anything and they don’t know they have anything! If someone has symptoms, their genital area may feel itchy, there may be a burning feeling after peeing or unusual discharge for both girls and guys.
Testing for trich can be done at your doctor’s office or at one of our health centers. If you want to get tested for trich, make sure you ask the doctor specifically for the test.
If you test positive for trich, you can be treated with antibiotic medication. Pregnant women can also take the medication without harming the baby. And, as always, if you’ve had unprotected sex, get an STD check-up to make sure you haven’t been re-infected or infected with another STD or with HIV. Also, it is very important to have your sex partner(s) examined and treated for trich. Otherwise they can give the infection back to you and/or infect others.
Not having sex is the only way to be sure you will not get infected with trich. If you are having sex, use condoms correctly every time to make sure you stay STD free. Also remember that you may not notice any symptoms of trich, so it is important to get tested regularly if you are having sex. Get STD check-ups every three to six months (that means at least twice a year, up to four times a year).
